London West End Debut!
I am very happy to announce that on March 28th one of my dreams came true. Thanks to the support of a great production team and many many friends, Rakugo made its debut in London’s West End!
The West End is the biggest centre for English theatre in the world – annual ticket sales for West End shows exceed even Broadway.
Rakugo played for one evening only at the Leicester Square Theatre – and the show was packed to its 400-seat capacity!
There was a great mood in the theatre – the audience of all ages – and it proved to me once again that Rakugo, a 400-year tradition of comic storytelling, can truly have a universal appeal.
Several media were in attendance including a reporter from NHK who flew from Japan specifically for the event.
Leading up to the show I was fortunate to have one other major debut – my first interview on TV in the United Kingdom. It was on London Live, and the interviewer, Luke Blackall, called me “The King of Kimono Comedy!” That is a great moniker – and the best English description of Rakugo I have heard to date!
The performance on March 28th was great fun, and a fantastic launch towards yet another debut – our first run in London’s West End of 10 shows beginning at the end of September!
